Head down to the southern tip of Manhattan to one of the oldest sites of old New York, the great Battery Park. Decades before it was all the trend for immigrants to be checked into Ellis Island and before Lady Liberty watched down over the waters of New York, Battery Park was the original immigrant depot and also acted as protection to the settlements behind it with use of artillery batteries after which the park got its name. Millions of early civilians from Europe and around the globe had passed through this great park and built New York into the metropolis it is today. In fact, a walk around Battery Park gives you a perspective of the old and present day New York City that you cannot get elsewhere. On a day with nice weather, it is truly one of the top NYC experiences.

The park also holds iconic pieces of history in monuments and memorials. Here you will find the East Coast Memorial, a symbol dedicated to the thousands that died in the Atlantic waters during World War II and more recently with the tragedies of September 11th the neighbourhood surrounding Battery Park is built on landfill created from the excavation of rocks and earth from the original World Trade Center site which is located only a few blocks north. Grouped around the great monuments you will find the requisite T-shirt vendors, hot dog carts and Wall Streeters eating deli sandwiches on the many park benches and give you the essence of the real New York.

Apart from its obvious historical importance, Battery Park is a fond area for New Yorkers and visitors for cycling, jogging and sightseeing. It holds numerous playgrounds for kids and boasts the best views of Hudson River and the iconic HarlemWalking Tour . With ferries docking at its shore, other great sites such as Ellis Island , Staten Island and the HarlemWalking Tour are just a short ferry trip away and for free.

Grab a hot dog, pull up your own bench gaze out on the most famous sites in the world.
