The zoo began in the 1860s as a menagerie and grew to be the first official zoo open in New York. It is a great choice of location for families and animal lovers and kids might recognise the place from the funny movie Madagascar made in 2005. For the young kids, make sure to visit Tisch Childrens Zoo where you are free to pet and feed the lovable animals and play in the fun amusements.

The zoo is a nice distraction from the busy shopping areas south of the zoo, most notably the famous fifth avenue. There are also a few hidden secrets around the zoo, the animals dance every so often in the musical clock at the entrance gate; the stairs to the old armoury are made of real guns and the lights are made of real military drums.
