The most recognisable building in the Manhattan skyline, the one and only Chrysler Building. Stretching high above the majority of the buildings in the city, the Chrysler Building was at one stage the tallest pick of the lot...for eleven months anyway, until it was surpassed by its main rival the
Empire State Building
. Funnily enough, the architects of both buildings were in a race with each other and other architects back in the twenties and thirties to outdo each other and see who would build the bigger skyscraper. And at one stage when the Bank of Manhattan had seemed like it had beaten the Chrysler Building, the cunning architect of the Chrysler had somehow hidden a giant needle inside the buildings cap and erected in no more than 90 minutes to beat its rival and the Eiffel Tower to become the biggest in the world, at least until the
Empire State Building
came along.
Besides the contest of what tower is the tallest in the city, one thing is for sure, the Chrysler Building is definitely the most stylish and with its art deco designed architecture it is considered by many architects as the finest building in New York City. The many gargoyles seen decorating the building are to depict Chrysler car ornaments and the spire is said to reflect a car radiator grille. The one time Chrysler Headquarters would win many New Yorkers vote for the most iconic and best loved skyscraper.
To grab the best views of this magnificent structure the best views you can get are, ironically, on the
Empire State Building
observation deck. View it at sunset to catch the light gleaming off the spire tip or even better, see it at night, when its peak illuminates the sky. Inside the building is actually off-limits apart from the amazing retro lobby replete with chrome grillwork, marble walls and floors, intricately patterned wood elevator doors and an enormous ceiling mural saluting transportation and the human endeavour.
If you want the best pictures of the great building, here is a tip for you. Make your way to either the north east or south east corner of east 44th Street and Third Avenue. Why? Because the entire block on the west side of Third Avenue has only four story buildings on it, thus giving you the perfect view of the Chrysler Building. It will be our little secret.
