The building that sees over everything in this marvellous city: the New York City Hall. This building is the oldest of all the city halls in the United States and since its inception in 1812 this great hall has seen everyone from Abraham Lincoln to Albert Einstein. Actually Abraham Lincoln was briefly laid in state with the hall as well as Ulysses S. Grant. The building still houses the original governmental functions such as the office of the Mayor of New York City and the chambers of the New York City Council and is open for reserved tours. Movie buffs may remember the Ghostbusters called to the office in the movie Ghostbusters to be briefed on the impending end of the world, as it were.
This great hall is located in the centre of City Hall Park in lower Manhattan and lies very close to the
Ground Zero
site of the World Trade Centre and
St Pauls Chapel
. Architecture aficionados flock here for the majestic rotunda, the Corinthian columns and arched windows. History buffs love the Governor's Room that is steeped in old American hertiage.
