One of the first skyscrapers built in New York City and once described as a stingy piece of pie because of its shape, the Flatiron Building is monument dedicated to those who had the vision for this great city. The building, located at 175 Fifth Avenue, is considered a groundbreaking skyscraper and an icon representative of New York City and one of its coolest historic buildings. Known for its unique triangular thin shape, it has a certain postcard image used by visitors of the city and is a favourite among tourists.
It is a hugely popular spot for photographs and some movie lovers will recognise it from the 1998 film, Godzilla, where the building was destroyed by the army in pursuit of the giant reptile and also it was depicted as the headquarters of the Daily Bugle, where a certain Peter Parker worked, known as Spiderman to you.
Back when the Flatiron was built in 1902, many critics of the infrastructure said it would never withstand the notoriously windy corner where Fifth Avenue and
Broadway
cross paths. In the end the amazing building proved them all wrong and it proved to be a catalyst of further development and uptown expansion. To see the old building up close it is truly amazing and gives you that great feeling that, this is New York City.
