The events of September 11, 2001, shocked and saddened the entire world as everywhere and everyone came to a standstill. What went on that day will never be forgotten, especially not for the thousands of families and friends that lost loved ones on that sorrowful day. At 11 AM that morning both the north and south tower had collapsed leaving a big hole in the skyline of Manhattan. Affectionately, millions of people have since come to pay their respects at the site of the towers known to many as Ground Zero.
What stands there today is a beautiful, plaza style memorial site that contains two immense waterfalls and reflecting pools situated within the original footprints of the destroyed towers. The names of the nearly 3,000 people who perished in the attacks are displayed on bronze parapets surrounding the reflecting pools. The area is a magnificent dedication to all the lives of heroes from the fire and police department and those many people that just happened to be there that day. It is awe inspiring, beautiful and really very emotional upon experiencing the area.
Get there just before the day ends when the sun starts to go down and the lights come on around the area. Wait until it gets as dark and listen to the rhythm of the falling water into the footprint pools, close your eyes and think of the people that were there that fateful day and the events that unfolded. It will be enough to wrench your heart and give you goose bumps, an experience like no other and you will not find anywhere else.
